The HP-25 arrived in 1975 as a cheaper, smaller way to program than HP's card-reading HP-65, and it was the first Woodstock that could run programs. HP's code name was Squash. It holds 49 steps and 8 storage registers, and it was the first HP to store a prefix and its function in one step, so those 49 go further than they sound. It was also the first calculator with an engineering display mode. There are no subroutines, just jumps to line numbers. In 1976 HP added the HP-25C, code name Squish, which keeps its program with the power off: the first calculator with battery-backed CMOS memory. Both have the red LED display and the two-cell NiCd pack every Woodstock shares.

Battery and power
HP's 82019A pack of two NiCd cells, shared by every Woodstock, and the 82026A or 82041A charger in the US. HP's handbook warns that running it from the charger with the pack out may damage the calculator. An old pack is almost certainly dead: HP's own test was a full charge, then 45 minutes on a load. Collector Tony Thimet notes the Woodstock's battery contacts tend to break off, so ask about them.
Memory
The plain HP-25 forgets its program when you switch it off. The HP-25C of 1976 looks the same but keeps its 49 steps and 8 registers, and it was the first calculator with battery-backed CMOS memory.
Display
A 10-digit red LED. When the pack runs low, every decimal point lights up, with about a minute left.
Keys
The Woodstock keyboard with gold f and blue g prefix keys. Ask about any key that needs a hard press or enters twice.
Original, reissue or clone
An HP-25C has Continuous Memory printed in white script along the bottom of the faceplate, and a plain HP-25 doesn't. HP's serial number starts with the year counted from 1960 (15 means 1975), and the letter after the next two digits gives the country: A for the USA, B for Brazil, S for Singapore.
Should come with it
An 82019A battery pack (expect it to need replacing)

Check the listing photos against this list, and ask the seller about anything you can’t see. A missing piece should come off the price.
What to check
The pack is usually dead, the battery contacts break off, and running it on the charger with no pack can damage it. Sellers mix up the HP-25 and the HP-25C, which keeps its memory.
01Battery contacts: Ask for a photo with the pack out. Both contacts should be there, straight and free of crust.
02Pack: Ask whether it runs from the battery pack alone. If it only works on the charger, plan on a new pack.
03Charger: Ask whether it was tested with the pack fitted. Running it from the charger with no pack can damage it.
04Display: Ask for a photo of the display lit with 8s. All ten digits should glow evenly with no dead segments.
05Keys: Ask whether every key registers once per press. No dead or doubled keys is what you want.
0625 or 25C: Look at the faceplate's bottom edge in the photos. Continuous Memory in white script means a 25C.
New to old calculators? The condition checklist covers battery corrosion, displays, keys and card readers, and RPN in one hour gets you typing on an HP.
Buying guide
Which one to buy
§ Oct 15, 2026
We'd buy the HP-25 titled fully functional with its case at $200 delivered, right at the $200 median and the cheapest one here sold as working. There are at least 23 for sale, many untested, and working ones mostly ask $170 to $310 delivered, so the boxed set at $468 is about 2.3 times the median. An original 82019A pack is almost certainly dead, so plan on a new or rebuilt one, never run it from the charger with the pack out (HP warns that can damage it), and ask about the battery contacts, which tend to break off. Ask for a photo of the display showing all 8s with every segment lit. A plain HP-25 forgets its program at switch-off, and only one with Continuous Memory in white script along the faceplate is the 25C that keeps it.
