The TI-58 of 1977 had one big flaw: switch it off and your program was gone. The TI-58C fixed that in 1979 with Constant Memory, swapping the power-hungry memory chip for a low-power CMOS one so programs and data stay put. Everything else is TI-58: up to 480 program steps or 60 memories, AOS algebraic entry, a red LED display and a slot on the back for Solid State Software modules, with the Master Library in the box. TI sold a dozen more modules for statistics, real estate, surveying, navigation and aviation. Wikipedia notes a TI-58 was used in the Harrier jump jet for stabilization during takeoff and landing. TI replaced it with the TI-66 in 1983.
480 program steps or 60 memories, split as you choose
Entry
TI's AOS algebraic entry, 9 levels of parentheses
Display
10-digit red LED (8 digits plus a 2-digit exponent), 13 digits inside
Keeps memory
Yes, TI's Constant Memory (low-power CMOS RAM)
Modules
Solid State Software module slot; the Master Library came in the box
Power
BP1A rechargeable pack, AC9131 charger

TI 58C, TI-58 C, TI Programmable 58C

Battery and power
The same BP1A NiCd pack and AC9131 charger as the TI-59. Keep a pack in it whenever it's on the charger, since TI's family warning applies here too, and check the battery bay for leaked crust.
Memory
This is the reason to buy a 58C over a plain TI-58. TI's Constant Memory keeps programs and data with the power off, using a low-power CMOS memory chip. The datamath museum notes the NiCd pack drains on its own faster than the memory does, so a flat pack still loses everything.
Display
A red 10-digit LED stick. A dim or flickering display usually means a tired pack before it means a fault.
Keys
The same keyboard construction as the TI-59, with a foam pad under it that ages badly. Ask about any key that needs a hard press.
Cards, ports and modules
No card reader. The back takes a Solid State Software module: the Master Library came in the box, and TI sold twelve more, from Applied Statistics to Surveying and Aviation.
Original, reissue or clone
Check the badge reads Programmable 58C. A plain TI-58 looks the same but forgets everything at switch-off, and sellers often call one the other. Store a number, switch off and on, and see if it's still there.
Should come with it
A BP1A pack and the AC9131 charger
The Master Library module and the manuals
Check the listing photos against this list, and ask the seller about anything you can’t see. A missing piece should come off the price.
What to check
The BP1A pack is usually dead or leaking by now, and a flat pack loses the memory too. Plain TI-58s get listed as 58Cs, so check the badge.
01Model badge: Check the photos show Programmable 58C on the badge. A plain TI-58 doesn't keep its memory.
02Battery bay: Ask for a photo with the pack out. Clean contacts with no white or green crust are what you want.
03Memory test: Ask the seller to store a number, switch off and on, then recall it. The number should still be there.
04Display: Ask for a photo of the display lit with 8s. All ten digits should glow evenly.
05Keys: Ask whether every key registers with one normal press. No dead or doubled keys is what you want.
06Module: Check the photos for the Master Library module under the back lid. It came with every 58C, so price a missing one in.

Buying guide
Which one to buy
§ Oct 15, 2026
Nothing here is titled working, so we'd only buy a TI-58C as a project, starting with the untested one at $37 delivered. Only 9 are listed, so the $40-85 band shows what untested and as-is units ask, not what a working one costs, and the one sold with a PC-100A printer cradle asks $300. Three of the photos show a badge reading plain TI Programmable 58, which forgets programs at switch-off, so check for the C before anything else. Treat any BP1A pack as dead and never run it on the AC9131 charger without a pack fitted, since TI warns that can damage it, and ask for a photo of the battery bay to check for leak crust. If one powers up, store a number, switch off and on, and recall it to check the Constant Memory.
