When the HP-42S arrived on October 31, 1988, it looked like HP's answer to the HP-41: it runs 41 programs, and its two-line display shows menus over the soft keys. It had no ports or card reader, though, so HP sold it as a successor to the 15C instead. Inside its 8 KB are matrices with an editor, complex numbers, a solver, integration, base conversion and even program-driven graphics, all in a pocket-sized Pioneer body that runs well over a year on three button cells. It was made until 1995. Its reputation outlived it: Thomas Okken's Free42 rewrote its software from scratch, and SwissMicros sells the DM42, a modern calculator built around Free42.

Battery and power
Three button cells, LR44 size. HP's manual says to use fresh cells and no rechargeables, and that a set lasts well over a year. HP excluded battery leaks from the warranty, so check the compartment.
Memory
Continuous Memory, as long as you swap batteries within a minute with the calculator off. Machine Reset at switch-on means your data survived; Memory Clear means it didn't. There's no official way to add memory.
Display
A two-line, 22-character LCD with adjustable contrast. Collector Tony Thimet notes dust gets trapped behind Pioneer displays and can't be removed.
Keys
The Pioneer keyboard, with no hinge or moving parts beyond the keys. HP's built-in self-test runs through the keys and shows OK-42S on a pass, so ask for that.
Cards, ports and modules
No card reader and no ports, only an infrared transmitter for HP's 82240 printer.
Original, reissue or clone
Pressing ON and LOG, then the decimal key, flashes the ROM version, like A7 or C7. The SwissMicros DM42 is a modern steel-cased clone that runs Free42, a rewrite of the 42S software with no HP code, and it runs on a CR2032 coin cell with a USB port.

The owner's manual and the slip case
Check the listing photos against this list, and ask the seller about anything you can’t see. A missing piece should come off the price.
What to check
Few documented faults. Check for leaked button cells, dust behind the display, and run the built-in self-test.
01Self-test: Ask the seller to run the self-test from the owner's manual. OK-42S on the display is what you want.
02Battery compartment: Ask for a photo with the battery door off. Clean contacts with no crust are what you want.
03Display: Ask for a photo of both display lines lit. Complete characters with no dust specks behind the window are what you want.
04Keys: Ask whether every key registers once per press. No dead or doubled keys is what you want.
05Real HP: Check the photos for a plastic HP case and three button cells. A steel case with a USB port is a SwissMicros DM42.
New to old calculators? The condition checklist covers battery corrosion, displays, keys and card readers, and RPN in one hour gets you typing on an HP.
Buying guide
Which one to buy
§ Oct 15, 2026
We'd buy the 42S titled tested with a case at $187 delivered, just under the $190-260 band most working ones ask. There are at least 19 for sale, mostly in the US with a few from Canada, and the one titled mint with its manual asks $390, about 1.8 times the $214 median. Ask the seller to run the self-test from the owner's manual, which should end with OK-42S, and for a photo with the battery door off to check for leaked button cells. A steel case with a USB port is a SwissMicros DM42, a modern clone, not an HP.
