The HP 32SII came out in March 1991 as an update to the 32S, and it's a pocket RPN scientific with a solver. HP added a second shift key, fractions and an equation solver you type in algebraically, on top of numerical integration and keystroke programming. Memory is tight at 384 bytes for programs and variables together, about 256 steps at most, but there are 26 lettered variables plus i to work with. It became the calculator of choice for the Texas UIL school calculator contests. HP made it until 2002, changing the colors in 1999 from orange and blue shift keys to green and purple. The HP 33s replaced it in 2003.

Power, memory, display and keys
Battery and power
Three LR44 button cells. Button cells can leak if left in for years, so ask for a look in the battery compartment.
Memory
Programs and variables stay put with the power off, as long as the batteries are good. All of it shares 384 bytes, so a long program leaves less room for data.
Display
A one-line, 12-character dot-matrix LCD. Hold C and press + or minus to change the contrast. Tony Thimet notes dust can settle behind Pioneer displays and can't be removed.
Keys
Two shift keys. Early units have a brown display bezel with orange and blue shift keys; from 1999 HP used a silver bezel with green and purple, which Thimet says was reputed to be lower quality.
Original, reissue or clone
HP 32SII on the face, not 32S (its 1988 predecessor, with one shift key) or 33s (its 2003 successor). Serials from before 1997 start with the year counted from 1960 and the week, then a country letter; later ones start with a country code like SG or ID.

Check the listing photos against this list, and ask the seller about anything you can’t see. A missing piece should come off the price.
What to check
Not much fails, but check the battery compartment for leaked button cells and the display for dust trapped behind the window.
01Battery compartment: Ask for a photo with the battery door open. Clean contacts with no crust are what you want.
02Display: Ask for a photo of the display switched on. Every character should be complete, with no dust specks behind the window.
03Keys: Ask whether every key, including both shifts, registers once per press. No dead or doubled keys is what you want.
04Model: Check the face reads 32SII. A 32S has only one shift key and a 33s is a later model.
05Version: Look at the shift-key colors in the photos. Orange and blue with a brown bezel is the earlier build.
New to old calculators? The condition checklist covers battery corrosion, displays, keys and card readers, and RPN in one hour gets you typing on an HP.
Buying guide
Which one to buy
§ Oct 15, 2026
We'd buy the 32SII titled tested and working with its original case at $101 delivered, at the bottom of the $100-170 band most working ones ask. There are at least 28 for sale, nearly all in the US, and the boxed one with its manual and case asks $290, about 2.4 times the $120 median. Button cells left in for years can leak, so ask for a photo with the battery door open, and one with the display on to check for dust trapped behind the window. Check the face reads 32SII, since the older 32S has one shift key; orange and blue shift keys on a brown bezel mark the pre-1999 build.
