HP launched the 48 series with the 48SX in 1990, and the G models of 1993 made it friendlier: input forms instead of bare stack commands, 3D plotting, and much of HP's Equation Library built in. The 48G is the base model, with 32 KB of memory and no card slots, running RPL, HP's programming language built on RPN, with symbolic math and units. A serial port and infrared link let it talk to a computer, which is how owners shared programs. HP sold it for ten years, to 2003, and it borrows its design from the HP-18C and HP-28. If you want room to grow, the 48GX has four times the memory and two card slots.
Three AAA cells. The HP48 FAQ advises against rechargeables and says memory is lost if the cells are out for more than about three minutes.
Memory
32 KB kept with the power off, and no way to add more: the 48G has no card slots. Back up anything important over the serial or infrared link.
Display
A 131 by 64 pixel LCD. HP used three versions of the screen over the years, with the contrast improving each time.
Keys
Purple and blue-green shift keys. The built-in self-test checks every key: hold ON and press D, then E, and press every key in order until it shows KBD1 OK.
Cards, ports and modules
A 4-pin serial port and infrared, for Kermit or Xmodem transfers to a computer. No card slots.
Original, reissue or clone
A 48G has 32 KB and no slots, a 48G+ from 1998 has 128 KB and no slots, and a 48GX has 128 KB and two slots. The hp 48gII of 2003 is a different calculator. Type VERSION to see the ROM letter.
Should come with it
The serial cable and the owner's manual
The slip case
Check the listing photos against this list, and ask the seller about anything you can’t see. A missing piece should come off the price.
What to check
Few documented faults. Use the built-in self-test to check the screen and keys, and make sure it's a 48G, not a G+ or GX.
01Self-test: Ask the seller to run the ON and D self-test's screen and keyboard checks. KBD1 OK after the key test is what you want.
02Battery compartment: Ask for a photo with the battery door off. Clean contacts with no crust are what you want.
03Display: Ask for a photo with the screen on. No dead lines or blotches across it is what you want.
04Model: Check the face reads 48G, not 48G+ or 48GX. The GX has card slots on the back.
05Keys: Ask whether every key registers once per press. No dead or doubled keys is what you want.
New to old calculators? The condition checklist covers battery corrosion, displays, keys and card readers, and RPN in one hour gets you typing on an HP.
Buying guide
Which one to buy
§ Oct 15, 2026
We'd buy the 48G titled tested and working with a case at $102 delivered, at the bottom of the $100-140 band most working ones ask. There are at least 28 for sale, and a 48G with its case and both user guides asks about $172 delivered. Check the face reads 48G, since a 48G+ has 128 KB and a 48GX has two card slots on the back, and treat the one titled 48G with 128K RAM as a likely 48G+ until the seller says which. Ask the seller to run the ON and D self-test through to KBD1 OK, and for a photo of the screen with no dead lines.
