Texas Instruments · Algebraic programmable · 1977–1983
TI launched the Programmable 59 in May 1977 as the big brother of the TI-58, and it was a serious machine. It held up to 960 program steps, saved programs to magnetic cards, and with the TI-58 it brought in plug-in Solid State Software modules: the Master Library in the box held 25 ready-made programs. Its rival when new was HP's HP-67, and Wikipedia says the TI-59 had about twice the memory. TI ran a program exchange for owners from 1977, companies ordered custom modules, starting with a payroll system that October, and BYTE printed a Star Wars game for it in 1980. It was the last of the LED line that began with the SR-50 and stayed on sale until 1983.

Bench check
Should come with it
Check the listing photos against this list, and ask the seller about anything you can’t see. A missing piece should come off the price.
The card reader is the weak spot: the drive wears and gets dirty, and the gears need cleaning and grease. Old BP1A packs leak, and running the calculator on the charger without a pack can damage it.
New to old calculators? The condition checklist covers battery corrosion, displays, keys and card readers, and RPN in one hour gets you typing on an HP.
Buying guide
We'd buy the TI-59 with a PC-100C printer cradle titled working at $160 delivered, the only one under $400 with a working claim from a seller above 98%. Only 9 are listed, so the $80-160 band isn't a market read. Bare calculators with the Master Library module ask $60-75 delivered, calculators with a PC-100A or PC-100C printer ask $84-160, and a boxed set titled bench tested asks $450. Treat any original BP1A pack as dead and never run it on the AC9131 charger without a pack fitted, since TI warns that can damage it, and ask for a photo of the battery bay to check for leak crust. None of the titles say the card reader works, so ask for a short video of a card being read and a photo of the display with every digit lit.
$159.99delivered
The lowest delivered TI-59 titled working, at $160 with a PC-100C printer cradle and free shipping. There's no key for the cradle, and the title doesn't mention the card reader or a pack, so ask how it was powered for the test.
