HP · Financial · 2003 to today
The 12C Platinum arrived in 2003 to keep the 12C's layout while adding what people kept asking for. It takes RPN or algebraic entry, with a key for each, holds up to 400 program steps against the 12C's 99, and HP claimed up to six times the speed. In 2005 HP added parentheses, undo and room for 80 cash flows. Kinpo builds it, and it's still on sale. One irony: when HP moved the original 12C to an ARM chip in 2008, the old model became the faster one. The CFA Institute allows every Platinum in the exam. If you learned on algebraic calculators and want a 12C you can use on day one, this is it.

Should come with it
Check the listing photos against this list, and ask the seller about anything you can’t see. A missing piece should come off the price.
No documented hardware faults. Check the display, the keys and the version, since only units from 2005 on have parentheses.
New to old calculators? The condition checklist covers battery corrosion, displays, keys and card readers, and RPN in one hour gets you typing on an HP.
Buying guide
We'd buy the Platinum titled tested and working with a case at $31 delivered, about $8 under the $39 median. There are at least 108 for sale and most ask $30 to $50 delivered, with a case and guide pushing a listing toward the top. Look for blue parentheses over STO and RCL in the photos, since only 2005 and later units have them along with room for 80 cash flows, and check the plate is silver, because a gold plate means an original 12C. Skip the Japan listing titled new sealed at $469 delivered, about 12 times the median for a calculator that's still sold new.
$27.27est. delivered
The lowest delivered Platinum titled working, at $27. Only the calculator is named, so expect no case or guide, and ask for a photo of the display lit.
