The HP 17BII replaced the HP-17B in January 1990, and the change was RPN: you can work in RPN or algebraic, which few HPs ever offered. HP's code name was Trader II. It's a business calculator built around menus, with time value of money, interest conversion, cash flows, bonds and depreciation under FIN, plus business percentages, statistics, a clock with appointments, and a solver that takes your own equations in place of keystroke programs. Its two-line display labels the menu keys, and it prints to HP's infrared printer. It runs on three button cells in HP's Pioneer body. The CFA Institute doesn't allow it in the exam. HP replaced it with the 17bII+ in 2003.

Battery and power
Three R44-size button cells; HP's manual says no rechargeables. The battery door slides off, so there's no hinge to break.
Memory
Continuous Memory, as long as you change the batteries within a minute. After the low-battery warning, HP says memory lasts about two weeks with the calculator off. MACHINE RESET at switch-on means your data survived; MEMORY LOST means it didn't.
Display
A two-line, 22-character LCD, with the bottom line naming what each menu key does.
Keys
Early units have a documented RPN bug: pressing +/- then x<>y puts a stray minus sign on the next number, and backspacing over it can reset the calculator. It was fixed early in 1991, so test any 1990 unit.
Cards, ports and modules
An infrared output for HP's 82240 printer.
Original, reissue or clone
The 17BII (F1638A) added RPN to the 1988 HP-17B, which is algebraic only. The 17bII+ of 2003 is a different, current calculator that runs on two CR2032 cells. Serials like 3228S08360 read 1992 (32 plus 1960), week 28, Singapore, per Tony Thimet's collection.
Should come with it

Check the listing photos against this list, and ask the seller about anything you can’t see. A missing piece should come off the price.
What to check
Units from 1990 can have an RPN bug with the +/- and x<>y keys, fixed early in 1991. Otherwise check the button cells and the display.
01RPN bug: On a 1990 unit, ask the seller to press 5, +/-, x<>y in RPN mode, then type 3. A plain 3 with no minus sign means it's fixed.
02Battery compartment: Ask for a photo with the door slid off. Clean contacts with no crust are what you want.
03Display: Ask for a photo of both display lines lit. Complete characters on both lines are what you want.
04Keys: Ask whether every key registers once per press. No dead or doubled keys is what you want.
05Model: Check the face reads 17BII, not 17B or 17bII+. The plain 17B has no RPN.
New to old calculators? The condition checklist covers battery corrosion, displays, keys and card readers, and RPN in one hour gets you typing on an HP.
Buying guide
Which one to buy
§ Oct 15, 2026
We'd buy the 17BII titled works great with new batteries at $22 delivered, about $9 under the $31 median, and its photo shows the menu labels lit beside a slip case. There are at least 45 for sale and most working ones ask $25 to $35 delivered. Several titles say 1987, but the 17BII came out in 1990 and the 1988 17B has no RPN, so check the face reads 17BII. Units from 1990 can put a stray minus sign on numbers in RPN mode, a bug HP fixed early in 1991, so ask for the serial (one starting 30 means 1990) and, on a 1990 unit, ask the seller to press 5, +/-, x<>y and then 3, which should show a plain 3. Skip the Australian listing at $87 delivered, nearly three times the median.
