HP called the 16C the most powerful calculator ever designed for computer science and digital electronics, and it's the only programmer's calculator HP built. It works in hex, decimal, octal and binary, with word sizes from 1 to 64 bits, unsigned or 1's or 2's complement, and it does AND, OR, XOR, shifts, rotates and masks at the press of a key. Floating point is decimal only. It arrived on July 1, 1982 with the 15C and left in January 1989, and later HPs like the 42S absorbed most of its functions. For decades it was the one Voyager HP never revived, until HP's licensee Moravia brought out the HP 16c Collector's Edition. An original still has the slow, deliberate feel of the 1980s chip.
Hex, decimal, octal and binary; word size 1 to 64 bits
Number modes
Unsigned, 1's complement, 2's complement
Logic
AND, OR, XOR, NOT, shifts, rotates and masks
Memory
203 bytes shared by programs and data
Power
Three button cells, 6 to 12 months of normal use (HP)
Also listed as
HP 16C, HP-16C, HP16C
Typical eBay ask (Oct 15, 2026)
$160–$280
Bench check
Power, memory, display and keys
Battery and power
Three button cells, alkaline LR44 or silver-oxide 357. The flashing asterisk in the lower left warns you they're low.
Memory
Continuous Memory. The 203 bytes are shared, and how many registers you get depends on the word size you set.
Display
The Voyager 10-digit LCD, which scrolls through long binary numbers in windows.
Keys
The Voyager keyboard, with a printed reference chart on the back. It's slow even by HP's standards: Tony Thimet's speed index puts only the HP-55 and HP-34C behind it.
Original, reissue or clone
Three button cells and HP-16C on the face mean an original. HP's licensee Moravia now sells an HP 16c Collector's Edition with two CR2032 cells and Collector's Edition on it, and SwissMicros makes the DM16. Serials like 2338A02989 read 1983, week 38, USA, per Thimet.
Should come with it
The slip case and the owner's handbook
Check the listing photos against this list, and ask the seller about anything you can’t see. A missing piece should come off the price.
What to check
No hardware faults are documented. Check the button cells, the display and every key, and that it's an original rather than the 2025 reissue.
01Batteries: Ask for a photo inside the battery door. Three button cells mean an original.
02Display: Ask for a photo of the display switched on in HEX mode. Every digit should be complete.
03Keys: Ask whether every key registers once per press. No dead or doubled keys is what you want.
04Real 16C: Check the face reads HP-16C with no Collector's Edition script. A DM16 is a SwissMicros clone.
05Back chart: Ask for a photo of the back. The printed reference chart should be readable.
New to old calculators? The condition checklist covers battery corrosion, displays, keys and card readers, and RPN in one hour gets you typing on an HP.
Buying guide
Which one to buy
§ Oct 15, 2026
We'd buy the 16C titled tested and working with a case at $137 delivered, about $60 under the $197 median. There are at least 33 for sale and most ask $160 to $280 delivered, with $197 buying the full kit of case and manual titled tested. Check the face reads HP-16C with no Collector's Edition script and ask for a photo inside the battery door, since three button cells mean an original and HP's licensee now sells a Collector's Edition on two CR2032s. The cheapest at $106 works but its title warns of LCD bleed, and two accounts list the same title at $192 each, so ask those for photos of the serial label. Skip the Japan listing at $634, over three times the median.
