Texas Instruments · Algebraic scientific · 1987 to at least 2000
In 1982 the TI-30 SLR became TI's first solar scientific, developed and built by Toshiba. The TI-30 SLR+ is the restyled version of 1987, one of a family of identical calculators that included the TI-31 and TI-35 SLR, and the datamath museum calls it a best seller. It's a simple machine: algebraic entry, one memory, an 8-digit LCD and a solar cell with no battery behind it. TI built it in China at first and in Italy from 1988, in four slightly different display designs, and kept it going for more than ten years. It's here because sellers list it as vintage. It isn't programmable, and it isn't on the exam lists.
Bench check
There's little to go wrong: no battery, no program memory. Check every key and the solar cell, and the name, since three different TI-30 SLR models get mixed up.
New to old calculators? The condition checklist covers battery corrosion, displays, keys and card readers, and RPN in one hour gets you typing on an HP.
Buying guide
We'd buy the TI-30 SLR+ titled tested with its cover at $11 delivered, under the $18 median. There are at least 31 for sale, most asking $10-25 delivered, and the slide cover and quick reference card are the only extras that come with them. It runs on its solar cell alone, so there's no battery to leak; ask whether it powers up under a desk lamp and for a photo of the display showing 8s. The one titled TI-30 SLR PLUS (Not +) may be the rare slim 1985 model Toshiba made in Japan, so check the photos before paying $41 delivered for it.
$7.00delivered
The lowest ask at $7 delivered, titled working with its cover and reference card. The title says the display is dim, so ask whether it reads clearly under a desk lamp.
